Pearson/Brookes : like a pelican on the wilderness [ but it will turn out wrong ]
'like a pelican in the wilderness' was commissioned by the Centre for performance Research, for presentation within the international 'Restless Gravity' festival, 2000.
The resulting work took the form of a propositional performance work. Constructed and developed live, 'like a pelican in the wilderness' proposed the evocation and experience of a loaded - and absent - artistic act, through structured manipulation of the available documentation. Video and sound recordings of the absent event being layered and mixed with statements of intent, descriptions, and any additional material and propositions that the performers would have hoped to have introduced.
Within a small darkened room containing four microphones, two video projections and an array of sound and playback equipment, the informal gathering of spectators and performers attempted to generate and experience both the meaning and intention of an absent incident, through the direct presentation of selected traces, opinions, and personal explanations - of what had, would, and could have happened.
'like a pelican in the wilderness' was presented with the help of Eddy Ladd, John Rowley, Roger Owen, Richard Morgan, and Rob Dean.
