{"id":2185,"date":"2018-12-14T11:27:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T10:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/?p=2185"},"modified":"2024-07-01T18:48:49","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:48:49","slug":"together-and-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/together-and-alone\/","title":{"rendered":"together and alone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not alone in wondering how to discuss things at the moment; when opposition is dismissed as \u2018fake\u2019, and arguments and information are replaced with slogans designed to \u2018win the narrative\u2019 by stirring emotions rather than ideas \u2013 slogans that can mean whatever I want them to mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions about which of us are really amongst \u2018the people\u2019 being talked about \u2013 or what I might individually want to \u2018take back control\u2019 of, and for or from whom \u2013 seem difficult to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the work, I don\u2019t feel able to offer answers to any of those questions, nor do I want to; but I do feel a need to try to shape and open up spaces where we might look at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Storm Cycle<\/em> began as an exploration of new ways to do precisely that, as these storms began to gather \u2013 and the next public step in that cycle feels like it may perhaps become as pivotal as it may be particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That step will try to reimagine and voice ideas drawn from <em>The Ethics of Ambiguity<\/em>, a collection of philosophical essays on the nature of freedom, choice and personal agency by Simone de Beauvoir \u2013 not only out of a recognition of the continued clarity and resonance of de Beauvoir\u2019s understandings, but also as an echo from the desolation and optimism that immediately followed WWII and gave birth to the Europe in which we now live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That attempt will become a work I\u2019m calling <em>Together and alone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we will shape and perform it in Newport, South Wales, in the weeks leading up the UK\u2019s currently planned date of departure from the EU next March\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/media\/stormcycle\/flag-greyscale.gif\" alt=\"\u201cThere is a storm comming\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[ Image: Mike Brookes ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not alone in wondering how to discuss things at the moment; when opposition is dismissed as \u2018fake\u2019, and arguments and information are replaced with slogans designed to \u2018win the narrative\u2019 by stirring emotions rather than ideas \u2013 slogans that can mean whatever I want them to mean.
