{"id":2187,"date":"2019-03-10T15:36:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T14:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/?p=2187"},"modified":"2024-07-01T18:48:05","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:48:05","slug":"the-problem-with-choosing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/2019\/03\/the-problem-with-choosing\/","title":{"rendered":"the problem with choosing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> The problem with choosing is that it just goes on, moment by moment,<br>\nfor an entire lifetime,<br>\nand happens without reason.<br>\nI guess I just still want to feel that I can always re-choose.<br>\nThat no choice I make will be so bad that I can\u2019t be saved from it,<br>\nfrom myself\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few months I have been writing a series of poetic soliloquies \u2013 drawn out from the flow and unfolding ideas, if not the language, of de Beauvoir\u2019s remarkable post-war collection of <em>The Ethics of Ambiguity <\/em>essays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I am now in the process of activating those words and ideas, with the also remarkable ensemble of eight local performers and performance poets who have agreed to give voice to them, and to try to find a voice for themselves within them \u2013 a group of performers, none of whom I have worked with before, whose capabilities and generosity of care are continually surprising me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a week or so we will move into The Neon here in central Newport, a persisting old 1930s Odeon cinema building \u2013 where this <em>Storm.3<\/em>, titled <em>Together and alone<\/em>, the third step along the journey of <em>The Storm Cycle<\/em> with National Theatre Wales, will be performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There we will be opening the doors onto a somewhere gently unsettled \u2013 reconfigured to provide us with an area of unlevel and windswept ground to come together on.
