{"id":2301,"date":"2021-03-16T16:06:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T15:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/?p=2301"},"modified":"2024-07-01T18:26:36","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:26:36","slug":"a-godly-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/a-godly-tale\/","title":{"rendered":"a godly tale ?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are working on a new gallery project, provoked by an invitation from Spanish artist N\u00faria G\u00fcell &#8211; who has commissioned us to make a new work, in response to one of her previous projects, as a contribution and intervention into a section of her forthcoming retrospective that she is calling a \u2018retrospective in the third person\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are picking up on aspects of the 2018 work <em>Una pel\u00edcula de Dios<\/em> (A godly tale) that N\u00faria did with a group of teenagers caught up in sexual trafficking and abuse in Mexico \u2013 who she asked to curate an exhibition of colonial-period religious paintings, drawn from various national collections, selecting images that resonated with their own personal understandings\u2026 Which they then used as a trigger and context for personal articulations of elements of their own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our part, Rosa and I have selected a single 17th century European depiction of Santa \u00c0gueda (aka Santa Agate) currently held in the collection of the Museu Belles Arts Val\u00e9ncia \u2013 one of the particular narratives of female martyrdom selected by the participants of the original project \u2013 and are considering the object of the painting not just as a physical trace of the context it was made &#8216;in&#8217;, but also as a physical combination of fragments of the material world it was made &#8216;from&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/media\/divinematter\/divine-matter-detail01-[900px].jpg\" alt=\"press image\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are commissioning a local painter to make as faithful a copy of the painting as they can, in terms of both its appearance and construction, as a way to unpick and explore the physical materials it consists and is composed of.
