{"id":2321,"date":"2021-08-12T14:13:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-12T13:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/?p=2321"},"modified":"2024-07-01T18:35:03","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T17:35:03","slug":"piles-and-holes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/piles-and-holes\/","title":{"rendered":"piles and holes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As we follow the questions and understandings arising from our recent work \u2013 from our explorations of the wider connections and perspectives we might perform, through meetings with the material stuff of the things and places we find ourselves working with \u2013 we have increasingly come to recognise the importance that the phrase \u2018piles and holes\u2019 has been accumulating for Rosa and I, in our private discussions and processes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This simple pairing has established itself as a shorthand reference between us, for an evolving\u00a0 and ambivalent collection of perceptions and possibilities, within both our conception and performance of the work. To the point that we are now, finally, forced to acknowledge it as a project and explorative way of thinking in its own right. And our most recent discussions \u2013 firstly around our ongoing work on the gallery project <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/category\/divine-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Divine matter<\/a><\/em> currently open in Barcelona, and secondly as we begin to reconsider and plan for a second full-scale version of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/blog\/category\/the-sky-was-clearer-in-those-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The sky was clearer in those days<\/a><\/em> for performance next June \u2013 have increasingly revealed just how much our casual shorthand references to \u2018piles and holes\u2019 have come to imply for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/media\/divinematter\/divine-matter-set01-[600px].gif\" alt=\"sketch\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its simplest, the phrase begins to name an imagining and conceptual model of the processes of extraction and accumulation that shape our use and experience of the landscapes we have been trying to explore \u2013 as a naming of the simple proposition that every accumulation or construction, every gathered pile of material, however small or large (from a door key to an apartment block), inevitably reveals the volume of an equivalent hole (or group of holes) from where its constituents came\u2026 And vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mikebrookes.com\/media\/divinematter\/divine-matter-set02-[600px].gif\" alt=\"sketch\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as a playful understatement, of potentially spiralling complexities, has proved itself to be a functional meeting and anchor point for a number of related threads of thought. Allowing the expanding resource requirements embodied by electric vehicles, for example, and the similarly expanding copper and lithium mining operations we visited in Chile, to be tangibly connected in the same object and imagining \u2013 across borders, times, scales, and hierarchies.
