This week we are opening the doors on to The sky was clearer in those days / El cielo era más claro en aquellos días… 

The work is the culmination, and first public manifestation, of ideas and work we have been developing since late last year. And is being presented as the opening project of Naves Matadero’s new international performance season, and the latest major commission with the venue’s Terreno Común / Common Ground programme.

Over a period of ten days, following its public arrival into the space this coming Friday evening, we will be dismantling a used family car – attempting to separate and break it down in to all its separate parts and elements. Across that period we be opening the space and process for a series of five separate and distinct public performances, on five separate evenings – each episode attempting to open a particular frame and possible perspective onto the act and situation of that deconstruction…

Episode 1, which we have decided to subtitle Of all the cars in all the world, will begin with the final journey of one of the 1 billion cars estimated to be currently driving around the streets of the planet.

Episode 2, subtitled On a clear day you can see for ever, will take a look up at the thin layer of atmosphere that surrounds us, and at how the things it picks up and blows around us define what and how we see.

Episode 3, which we are calling We are the asteroid, imagines the human population as a force of nature, and the scale of geological forces and events that might begin to mirror our own.

Episode 4, subtitled The world is a dusty place, will follow some of the debris that rises and settles from everything we do, and the remnants we all just pass on to our neighbours, and never escape.

Episode 5, which we will call Of all the waste in all the world, will see us collect together everything that we might find a new use or purpose for, try to give it away, and then take a look at what is left…
